After concluding a rabbinic ordination test the examining rabbi asked his student to name the fifth volume of Shulkhan Arukh (Code of Jewish Law). The student was surprised and answered that the Code of Jewish Law only has four volumes. The rabbi responded that common sense and good judgment is the fifth volume explaining that, “Without these all your rulings will be useless no matter how well versed you are in the other four volumes.”

J Street the new Israel lobby in the USA held their first conference last week. The Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren declined to attend but the Obama administration was well represented by the President’s National Security Adviser James Jones. J Street has raised much ire amongst many in the Jewish community. The reason is simple J Street is a left wing organization that is happy to criticize the Israeli government and lobby the United States Government for what they perceive to be in Israel’s interests.

In an article in the Wall Street Journal this week Alan Dershowitz states that many American Jewish supporters of United States President Barrack Obama feel that they have been a victim of a bait and switch. He argues that during the election campaign last year Obama declared his strong support of Israel but now that he is President he is taking stances that seem to be opposed to Israel’s best interests. He then tries to defend Obama’s demand to halt all settlements, including natural growth, as pro-Israel rather than calling it what it is—a US President taking a blatantly Arab propagandist point of view. There are worrying signs that Israeli society may be tilting towards a damaging inner fight between the religious and secular segments of society. This is occurring not only on the level of national politics where there has been contentious discussion about secular civil marriage and conversion reform, but perhaps more disturbingly, this is also happening in the army. Israelis aren’t stupid and they no longer trust a word their politicians say, especially when main players, Netanyahu and Livni, have deceived them before
Deceit is seen by Judaism as especially repugnant. As a prelude to the Israelite’s entry into the Land of Israel the Torah warns the Jewish people against acting dishonestly.
