ImageJudaic sources do not attribute Moses’ stunning rise to power to his intellect or to his amazing oratory. In fact, Moses had impaired speech. He may have been an amazing strategist and tactician, but these are not seen as his most praiseworthy attributes. According to the Jewish tradition, his greatest asset was humility.

The following story from the Torah illustrates this humility. Moses’ father-in-law was Jethro, a powerful tribal leader as well as a chieftain, a scholar, and a mystic. When Moses became Jethro's son-in-law, he was a fugitive on the run from Pharaoh's wrath and had not yet had a Godly revelation. Jethro was an idolater and Moses was a believer in monotheism. Needless to add, these were factors that could not have been conducive to a wholesome father-in-law/son-in-law relationship.

ImageOn the issue of freedom and free will, the Bible tells us that we have a choice between life and good or death and evil. Although it is up to us, the Bible implores us to choose life and good and to reject death and evil (Deuteronomy, 30:15-19). But is it really that simple? The following biblical story, found in this weeks’ Torah Portion, seems to indicate that it is not.

G-d told Moses to approach Pharaoh and demand that he emancipate the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. When Pharaoh rejected Moses’ demands, G-d brought plagues upon him and his people. First came the plague of blood, then of frogs, then lice, then a swarm of wild beasts brought an epidemic that killed all the Egyptian livestock.

ImageThere was a time when children saw it as their responsibility to look after their ageing parents. Today unfortunately we live in a very fast-paced world and if one wants to get ahead one must put in those billable hours. Often this leaves little time to dedicate to those around us who may be vulnerable. Many older people feel let down by their children, who seem to have no time for them. Although most children do not act in this way intentionally, it is nonetheless very disheartening for parents who feel that they sacrificed so much to ensure their children’s success.

Mark W. Everson had led the Red Cross for just six months.
This week the American Red Cross dismissed its president and chief executive, Mark W. Everson, citing his “personal relationship with a subordinate employee.” He had been in office for only six months. This has caused much discussion about whether is was right for the Red Cross to fire Mr. Everson over a workplace affair and whether sexual morality should be a reason to dismiss and employee.

In this week Torah portion we read about just such a dilemma by one of Judaism’s most famous founding figures Joseph.
