A couple of years ago I was invited on to the Esther Rantzen show to talk about whetherchildren need fathers. Obviously I was arguing for the motion, but one of the women arguing against it had a son conceived by artificial insemination who till this day does not know the identity of his biological father. When asked why she wanted a child, she said that she felt a natural urge to be a mother, that her biological clock was ticking away and that she saw no reason why she should she lose out just because she did not have a partner with whom to have the baby.

There was a time when children saw it as their responsibility to look after there ageing parents. Today unfortunately we live in a very fast-paced world and if one wants to get ahead one must put in those billable hours. Often this leaves little time to dedicate to those around us who may be vulnerable. Many older people feel let down by their children, who seem to have no time for them. Although most children do not act in this way intentionally, it is nonetheless very disheartening for parents who feel that they sacrificed so much to ensure their children’s success.

The fifteenth day in Av - the day the young women went in to the vineyards to find a groom - was a day that symbolized a society that had internalized ideas of morality, selflessness and family values
Some in Israel mark the fifteenth day of the month of Av with a “Festival of Love” and commemorate it with all night rock concerts. There are also those who celebrate it by attending "Love, Sexuality and Art Festivals." Recommend this article... |
