While on a visit to Israel this week I noticed a billboard advertisement in Tel Aviv for a Chevrolet Mini SUV and the price tag was 211,000 Shekels that $58,800 approximately double the price you would pay for the same car in the USA. One would think that such a car would be unaffordable for most people but a quick survey of the roads show that it is filled with cars that cost between $30,000 and $60,000. In the small village I am staying in, which is not known for its wealth, many new large houses have gone up over the last few years. Whenever I ask where people have so much money from I am told that it is a mystery and each person has their own story of how they get their money. Recommend this article... |

Experience has shown that Israel will continue on path of self-destruction irrespective of whether US president is pro-Israel or not
As the United States presidential primary season heats up, I am often asked whether Jews have the obligation to work to get a pro-Israel candidate elected. Not necessarily, I find myself thinking. Maybe domestic issues affecting Jews should take priority.Recommend this article... |

To assume that a team that made such disastrous and obvious blunders last summer is able to fix them is to be naïveMany of us who take interest in Israel have been shocked by what has transpired there over the last week. It is inconceivable how a prime minister can remain in office after he has been found guilty of severely failing at his job, going to war without a proper plan and being personally responsible for numerous faulty decisions However, while speaking this week to a close friend who fought in the Second Lebanon War the problem became even clearer to me. Israel often makes Diaspora Jews feel excluded from the Jewish enterprise which is IsraelAs a British citizen living in the USA and married to an Israeli I have a complex relationship with Yom Haatzmaut (Israeli Independence Day). Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Remembrance Day) is easier to connect with. On Yom Hazikaron in our house we watch Israeli news on the Internet and the special reporting abut the soldiers who were killed while defending Israel and the civilians killed in terror attacks. Olmert and his subordinates have handsomely earned their dismal ratings – let us hope that they now get the message and make way for new and responsible leadership to take over
Polls out just this week show that 77 percent of Israelis are dissatisfied with Ehud Olmert’s performance as Prime Minister. In common with President Bush, Olmart’s approval ratings have suffered terribly because of a botched war. Recommend this article... |
