We have all experienced interesting coincidences in our lives. Some of us, however, experience them more often and more intensely than others. But are they really coincidences or is there something else at work here.

A friend of mine was a very successful businessman. He climbed the corporate ladder rung by rung until eventually he got to the top. That was it - he had made it. He had the house on the beautiful road, the paved driveway, the Mercedes, and his children all went to private schools. What more could he ask for? This son of immigrants epitomised all that capitalism has to offer: success, comfort and luxury. But he wasn’t happy.

You see, in order to get to where he was he had to tread on, bully, embarrass and destroy many other people along the way and somehow this didn’t quite feel right. Not only that but the time he should have been spending with his family he spent on his career. And sure enough one day, after a long and successful day at the office, he came home and his wife told him she had had enough - she wanted a divorce. He virtually lost his family.

J Street the new Israel lobby in the USA held their first conference last week. The Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren declined to attend but the Obama administration was well represented by the President’s National Security Adviser James Jones. J Street has raised much ire amongst many in the Jewish community. The reason is simple J Street is a left wing organization that is happy to criticize the Israeli government and lobby the United States Government for what they perceive to be in Israel’s interests.

A couple of years ago I was invited on to a TV talkshow to talk about whether children need fathers. Obviously I was arguing for the motion, but one of the women arguing against it had a son conceived by artificial insemination who till this day does not know the identity of his biological father. When asked why she wanted a child, she said that she felt a natural urge to be a mother, that her biological clock was ticking away and that she saw no reason why she should she lose out just because she did not have a partner with whom to have the baby.
