World Magazine: Title tell-alls

Temporarily insane authors choose obscure titles; for example, does the title More Than Kindness tell you that a book is about abortion and adoption? But the cover of Theodore Roosevelt Malloch's Spiritual Enterprise: Doing Virtuous Business (Encounter, 2008) tells you what's up—and what's inside shows clear Christian thinking. Levi Brackman and Sam Jaffe provide a folksy Old Testament equivalent in Jewish Wisdom for Business Success: Lessons from the Torah and Other Ancient Texts (Amacom, 2008).

The great Jewish philosopher Maimonides wrote that a person who has suffered misfortune feels less miserable when confronted by a person in a more calamitous situation than themselves.  Similarly when a dejected person sees someone who is more privileged than them their sense of despondency is increased. People who are unsuccessful find it difficult to observe the success of others. Our challenge is to overcome this negative envious trait and be happy for others even if we personally are experiencing setbacks.

Americans, on the whole, have failed in rising to this challenge. Last summer, as oil prices rose, oil companies made record profits. As the profits went up so did the envy and ire of the American people.  In response prominent politicians berated the oil companies and threatened to tax them heavily. But things have now become much worse.

There is tremendous concern about the future of Judaism around the world. About one hundred and fifty years ago as the emancipation of the Jews occurred in Europe and beyond Jewish leaders grappled with how to keep Judaism alive and relevant. Some leaders decided to reform Judaism and make it “more relevant” to an age of enlightenment. Thus, Reform Judaism was born. However one hundred and fifty years later on it is apparent that, rather than keeping Judaism alive, the Reform movement together with its sister movements such as the Conservative Movement and others, is just slowing the pain of Judaism’s demise.
