The argument about healthcare in the United States is heating. According to many on the right the United States has the best healthcare in the world and it should not be tampered with. According to the left the entire healthcare system needs to be overhauled because, in their view, it does not meet the needs of a modern society.
But the question is more fundamental: what are our ethical responsibilities when it comes to caring for the health of others? Do we as a society have a responsibility to provide health care that is—similar the National Health Service in the UK—universal, tax funded and free at the point of need?Recommend this article... |

Reading about Jewish communal politics is a favorite past time for British Jews and the UK’s Jewish Chronicle usually does a wonderful job of reporting the community’s foibles. But the most recent UK Synagogue fight beats all of the rest. Except this time the childishness is trounced by the heartless and callous treatment of the rabbi involved.

A couple of years ago I was invited on to a TV talkshow to talk about whether children need fathers. Obviously I was arguing for the motion, but one of the women arguing against it had a son conceived by artificial insemination who till this day does not know the identity of his biological father. When asked why she wanted a child, she said that she felt a natural urge to be a mother, that her biological clock was ticking away and that she saw no reason why she should she lose out just because she did not have a partner with whom to have the baby.

This is the time of year when we are supposed to introspect as individuals. No doubt, however, it would be a good time to examine ourselves as a nation as well. There are many problems facing us as Jews. Anti-Semitism is on the rise all over the world. Iran is getting closer to developing a nuclear bomb and no one seems to have the ability to stop them. The White House is inhabited by a person who is pressuring Israel to act contrary to its long term interests. Jews have been hurt by the fallout of the financial crises and the massive fraud of Bernard Madoff. The list goes on.

J Street the new Israel lobby in the USA held their first conference last week. The Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren declined to attend but the Obama administration was well represented by the President’s National Security Adviser James Jones. J Street has raised much ire amongst many in the Jewish community. The reason is simple J Street is a left wing organization that is happy to criticize the Israeli government and lobby the United States Government for what they perceive to be in Israel’s interests.
