The Failed Ukrainian Revolution PDF Print E-mail

The Ukraine holds the final round of its Presidential election this coming Sunday. For those who have not been following the frontrunner to win the presidency is Viktor Yanukovych, the same person who was ousted from power due to allegations of voter fraud and corruption during the Orange Revolution in 2004. What in 2004 was seen as a peaceful revolution, a powerful display of democracy and a move towards the directions of freedom quickly became a nightmare of inefficiency and political infighting. So now the Ukraine has lost faith in that type of democracy and seems to be reverting to the type of leadership that harkens back to authoritarianism.

There are two types of Westerner’s who have been critical Israel’s defensive actions in Gaza this week: anti-Semites and some in the so-called Jewish intellectual elite. Whilst most non-Jews I have met over the last few days have expressed support for Israel’s actions I have run into a number of Jews who have expressed their moral outrage at the Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

We are all painfully aware that oil prices have doubled over the last two years, and despite the fact that the price has recently fallen from its high of $147 a barrel, it is still at record levels. Here in the United States the politicians have come up with all types of solutions..

The prisoner exchange between Israel and Hizbullah was so painful and disturbing that, in my eternal search for optimism, I tried to find some light and hope. At first I thought that at least there is some type of common ground being show here.

Before I decide which political party or candidate to vote for I always try and compare their policies and positions with the stated views of the Torah. The politician or party which is closest to those ideas earns my vote.
