The great religious-secular divide amongst Jews in Israel and to a lesser extent in America threatens not only the future of Israel but it also puts the entire Jewish people in jeopardy. There is surely enough blame to go around—but as a religious person I must begin by looking inwards and critiquing myself and my community.

There is tremendous concern about the future of Judaism around the world. About one hundred and fifty years ago as the emancipation of the Jews occurred in Europe and beyond Jewish leaders grappled with how to keep Judaism alive and relevant. Some leaders decided to reform Judaism and make it “more relevant” to an age of enlightenment. Thus, Reform Judaism was born. However one hundred and fifty years later on it is apparent that, rather than keeping Judaism alive, the Reform movement together with its sister movements such as the Conservative Movement and others, is just slowing the pain of Judaism’s demise.

The Emmanuel school affair has become increasingly troubling. Now the sides have become so deeply entrenched in their views that they are ignoring reality. Unfortunately racism and unfair prejudices and even hatred is a pathology that effects all segments of human society and in order for it to be eradicated it needs to be contently fought against.

After concluding a rabbinic ordination test the examining rabbi asked his student to name the fifth volume of Shulkhan Arukh (Code of Jewish Law). The student was surprised and answered that the Code of Jewish Law only has four volumes. The rabbi responded that common sense and good judgment is the fifth volume explaining that, “Without these all your rulings will be useless no matter how well versed you are in the other four volumes.”

Watching the world standing impotently by as Iran races towards acquiring nuclear weapons is terrifying. And seeing how humanity if unable to overcome the oil well it drilled in the Gulf of Mexico is humbling.  In the later case we are confronted by human limitation and in the former by human idiocy—the common denominator however is arrogance.
